Homeless and Unsheltered - Christadelphian Initiative

Reaffirming dignity and humanity for the homeless and unsheltered

Homelessness remains a critical issue in North America, affecting countless individuals who lack safe and stable housing. Many are forced to live on the streets or in temporary shelters, enduring harsh conditions and societal stigma. Homelessness can also lead to profound physical, emotional, and psychological challenges. Without stable housing, individuals face exposure to harsh weather, increased health risks, and a lack of safety and security. These conditions can erode self-worth and hope, making it difficult to break the cycle of poverty.

Through Bags of Love, we will supply you with sleeping bags that would then be donated to a local outreach organization. This simple act of kindness offers warmth and protection, showing compassion to those most in need. Make a tangible difference today in the lives of the unsheltered, reaffirming their dignity and humanity through our collective efforts. Together, we can bring comfort and hope to our community’s most vulnerable members. These efforts can also lead to fulfilling and encouraging opportunities to preach the gospel message in addition to your ecclesia becoming more visible in the community, an essential ingredient for future gospel proclamation efforts!

“Is not this the fast that I choose… to share your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover them, and not to hide yourself from your own kin… If you remove the yoke from among you, the pointing of the finger, the speaking of evil, if you offer your food to the hungry and satisfy the needs of the afflicted, then your light shall rise in the darkness and your gloom be like the noonday” (Isaiah 58:6-10, NRSV).

The sad reality

Homelessness is a pervasive issue in North America, significantly impacting both Canada and the United States. In Canada, approximately 235,000 individuals experience homelessness each year, with around 35,000 people facing homelessness on any given night. Cities like Toronto have seen increased numbers in recent years, with the shelter system accommodating about 2,000 more people each night compared to April 2021 (Snappy Rates).

In the United States, homelessness is even more widespread, with an estimated 580,400 people experiencing homelessness on a single night in January 2020. The problem has been exacerbated by systemic failures across multiple sectors, including affordable housing, healthcare, and social services (Harvard School of Public Health). The COVID-19 pandemic further intensified the crisis, causing a 12% increase in homelessness between 2022 and 2023 (Harvard School of Public Health).

“[P]eople experiencing homelessness are nearly 30 years younger at the time of death compared to the general population, often due to treatable conditions…”

A vicious cycle

The long-term effects of homelessness are profound and far-reaching. Individuals experiencing homelessness often suffer from severe health issues, both physical and mental. In the U.S., people experiencing homelessness are nearly 30 years younger at the time of death compared to the general population, often due to treatable conditions exacerbated by living without shelter (USIC Homelessness). In Canada, mental illness, addiction, and trauma are significant contributors to homelessness, compounding the difficulties faced by those already struggling with housing insecurity (Snappy Rates).

Doing our part

The need for compassion and practical assistance is critical. Bags of Love is a practical and compassionate outreach initiative, providing sleeping bags for Brothers & Sisters, CYCs or ecclesias to donate to local outreach organizations. This initiative helps to address the immediate needs of the unsheltered, offering them some relief and dignity in their daily struggles. It also opens a door to establishing a relationship with organizations who provide direct support to those in need which can lead to additional outreach and preaching opportunities. Grassroots efforts are vital in combating the harsh realities of homelessness and exemplify how our community can come together and support those in need. Register today.

How You Can Help:

1. Donate Supplies

When donating the sleeping bags, consider including additional supplies such as deodorant, socks and gloves. Many of these items can be purchased for a relatively low cost. We also have fleece blankets as an add-on, specifically for those in colder climates.

2. Preach!

Consider including simple faith-growing material with your donation such as a Bible or local contact information about your ecclesia. For example, when you register for the Bags of Love initiative, you can choose to receive printed copies of a pamphlet introducing Christadelphians and your ecclesia. We also offer large-print Bibles as an add-on.

3. Monetary Contributions

If you prefer, you can make a monetary donation to our cause. This allows us to continue offering this initiative to the Christadelphian community.

4. Spread the Word

Help raise awareness about the homeless and this initiative. Share this page on your social media channels, announce Bags of Love on Sunday mornings, or encourage others to visit our website and register for Bags of Love.
