Care Packs for the Homeless and Unsheltered

In times of need, a simple care pack can be a powerful act of love and support. Boxes of Love provides an opportunity to share Christ’s compassion with those who may be struggling. By thoughtfully assembling care packs filled with essentials, we can help meet immediate needs and show that someone cares.

This page offers guidance on how to create these care packs thoughtfully, with helpful suggestions on what to include and what to avoid. Whether you’re putting together a pack on your own, with friends or your ecclesia, each item and gesture of kindness can make a difference.

What TO Include in Your Care Pack:

Each item in a care pack has the potential to meet a practical need and bring comfort. Here are some thoughtful essentials to include in a Box of Love:

Non-Perishable Food Items

Small, easy-to-open snacks like granola bars, peanut butter packets, dried fruit, and canned goods with pull tabs are ideal. Protein-rich items, such as nuts or tuna packs, provide healthy energy and nourishment.

Personal Hygiene Products

Travel-sized toiletries such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, soap, hand sanitizer, and wipes are invaluable. Consider unscented products for those with sensitivities.

Warm Clothing and Accessories

Items like socks, gloves, hats, and scarves can be life-changing, especially in colder seasons. New or gently used clothing in neutral colors is generally most practical.

First Aid Essentials

Adhesive bandages, antiseptic wipes, and small packs of tissues can be a huge help for minor injuries.

Encouraging Notes or Bible Verses

A simple, heartfelt note or an uplifting Bible verse can go a long way to lift someone’s spirits and remind them they are not alone.

What NOT to Include in Your Care Pack:

Some items, while well-intentioned, might not be safe or practical for those receiving the care packs. Here’s a list of things to avoid:

Perishable or Bulk Foods

Foods that require refrigeration or come in large containers may spoil quickly or be difficult to carry. Stick with small, non-perishable items instead.

Medications or Vitamins

Even common over-the-counter medications can pose health risks. Avoid including any medications, vitamins, or supplements for safety reasons.

Sharp or Hazardous Items

Items like razors, scissors, or glass containers can be dangerous. Stick to soft, non-breakable, and non-hazardous products.

Heavy or Oversized Items

Keep packs light and easy to carry by avoiding bulky items. Aim for compact, lightweight essentials that fit easily into a small bag.

Expensive or Valuables

High-value items like cash, gift cards, or electronics may attract unwanted attention and should be avoided for safety.

By focusing on safe, practical items, your Box of Love will be both helpful and easy for the recipient to manage.

General Distribution Advice

When distributing your Boxes of Love, thoughtful and respectful interaction is key. Consider locations where people in need are likely to gather, such as shelters, community centers, or designated outreach areas. By partnering with local organizations, churches, or charities, you can help ensure your care packs reach those who would benefit most, and you may even extend the reach of your efforts.

As you hand out the care packs, approach each person with kindness and respect. A warm greeting and friendly demeanor can make the exchange feel more meaningful and dignified. Keep in mind that some individuals may feel uncomfortable accepting assistance; it’s important to respect personal boundaries and offer the care pack without any pressure.

Each pack also presents a special opportunity to share God’s love. If the moment feels appropriate, you might offer to pray for the person or share a few words of encouragement. Through these simple gestures, your care pack becomes more than just a gift of essentials—it reflects the compassion and hope found in Christ.

“Our “boxes” were drawstring backpacks. We filled them with essentials like toothbrushes and toothpaste, tissues, feminine products, snacks; Bibles, handwarmers, gloves chapstick; wet wipes; bandaids, razors, combs…[plus] Dunkin Donut $5 gift cards and boxes of diapers and wipes. We donated everything to a women’s shelter that also had a food pantry for local residents. The diapers and wipes went to the pantry. They were most appreciative and we are hoping to work with them in the future and form a relationship.”
